The fishhook, or "matau," was a revered necessity for survival to the ancient Maori tribesmen who first populated New Zealand. Our Hei Matau bone fishhook rope necklace for men pays tribute to the power, mysticism and good fortune associated with this traditional Maori symbol of prosperity.

Our Hei Matau is expertly hand carved from a thick and sturdy piece of creamy white animal bone. Three barbs extend from the hook's side, looking strong and sharp enough to snag a mighty game fish.

The front of the hook is engraved with a textured matrix of geometric lines resembling sacred Maori body tattoos, signifying a person's social rank, wealth, and achievements.

The back of the hook is polished until it's smooth as glass. The bone will become warm with your body's heat, making the fishhook feel like part of your skin. Maoris believe that bone jewelry absorbs a person's "mana" or sprit, forming an unbreakable connection between the Hei Matau and its owner. A tough, woven black cord will make sure that metaphysical bond never breaks.

Size: The pendant measures 2 inches tall and 1 1/4 inches wide. The rope cord is 26 inches long and 3/32 inch thick.

Material: Genuine Buffalo Bone. Black Braided Rope.
